L'ENCAMISADA - the brave men of Falset

On the weekend nearest to 17th January (St. Anthony) in Falset there is an ancestral festival which has it's origin in legend. It is said that men from the town ambushed French invaders in the 18th century, taking them by surprise during a foggy night by wearing white shirts. The festival consists of a parade of decorated carts pulled by animals and people wearing traditional dresses followed by the blessing of animals and the dance of coques (a type of sweet bread).

There are fireworks at about midday to announce the big day. The parade and more fireworks starts late at night when it seems the whole town is out. The parade is led by Diablos (devils) who let off fireworks above their heads. The parade follows and there are plenty of carts and people taking part.
